About

For those who need to know if the camera is working or not, I have developed a simple webcam checker. It is fast, simple and free. This checker allows you to check your webcam online to see if it is working properly. This test provides only a few details about your camera (more precisely, the camera name and default resolution).

How To Use Our Tool

1. Press the Check my webcam button.
2. A small window might appear on the top of the page, asking you to allow access to your camera and microphone. Allow it.
3. Wait a few seconds to get the result.

It looks like the test failed - what should I check?

Make sure the camera is plugged securely into your computer or mobile.

If you have more than one USB port, try plugging it into another port.

Update your webcam drivers by searching your webcam model plus drivers on Google.

Access to the webcam may be blocked, refresh the page and check if the browser is asking for access. If so, enable it.

Try the webcam with another browser and another computer or device. See if it works with another setup.

If all of these steps fail, the webcam is likely defective and needs to be replaced or repaired.

What do the terms in the Webcam Information or camera information box mean?

  • Webcam Name: The name of the current webcam that the test is connected to.
  • Frame rate: Frame rate or FPS is the amount of frames that your camera takes and displays per second.
  • Webcam Resolution: The number of pixels being captured per row and column. For example: 1920X1080 means the picture is 1920 pixels wide and 1080 pixels tall, for a total of 1920 by 1080 pixels: 2,073,600 pixels. This resolution is commonly referred to as 1080p.
  • Aspect Ratio: The ratio of the width and length of the webcam image. For example: older TV screens were typically in a more boxy aspect ratio of 4:3 (4 is the width and 3 is the length). Most modern TV screens have an aspect ratio of 16:9, while a smartphone is longer than it is wide, and has the opposite aspect ratio of 9:16.
  • Webcam MegaPixels: The resolution is how many megapixels a camera has in its picture (one megapixel is equal to one million pixels). Generally, the more megapixels, the more detailed the photo, but these days megapixels are considered just one of many factors that contribute to the quality of a photo or video.
  • Facing Mode: If you're on a mobile device - the camera currently in front of you is selected, User (selfie cam) or Environment (front cam)
  • Built-in Microphone: Does your webcam have an integrated microphone that allows it to record video as well as audio?
  • Built-in Speaker: Does the webcam have an integrated speaker that allows audio to be played?
  • PNG File Size: If the photo taken with your camera is saved as a PNG file, this will be its file size.
  • JPEG File Size: If the photo taken with your camera is saved as a JPEG file, this will be its file size.
